Gmail Label Colours - eM Client
Desktop Email Software
Although a great number of people use a phone app or webmail to manage all their email, there are still those who either prefer or need to use a desktop client. With over 230 million active monthly Office 365 users in October 2020, Microsoft Outlook has a good chunk of the large business market tied up. With Google Workspace (formerly G Suite), you’ve got more options.
If you’re eM Client, there’s a chance you use it together with a Gmail account. Labels are a crucial part of organising mail in Gmail so it important that any desktop client supports these.
Gmail Labels vs. eM Client Tags
Overall, eM Client does a good job but it’s not perfect. In this video, I’m looking at how to work with labels and tags but also how to match the colours between eM Client and Gmail. I also discuss the limitations of the desktop software.
Watch the video for a full demonstration together with a ‘bug’ to watch out for when working with labels that can easily cause you to remove all the labels from your Gmail account.
Label Colour Workaround
Label colour information is not transferred from Gmail to any third-party email software. It would be nice if it was as once you set your colours, they become a immediate visual cue for what type of mail you’re looking at.
The only way to fix this in eM Client is by doing the following.
Create your label in Gmail (you probably already have this)
Right-click on a message in eM Client and make sure this label is showing under ‘Tags’
Go to [Menu] -> [Tags] and add a Tag with exactly the same name as the Gmail label
Assign the Tag a colour to match Gmail
Save changes and eM Client will link your new Tag with your Gmail label across all your messages.
Apply that Tag to a message and it will correctly assign the label in Gmail too.
